Jazz X-Press Presents 'Facts of Jazz' Concert April 25th

Rocky WinslowPresented Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre, CSU, Chico’s Jazz X-Press, under the direction of Professor Rocky Winslow, reaches into its bag of music icons to perform a night of memorable jazz music.

The Chico High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Todd Filpula, will open the show.

The Jazz X-Press will be performing works by Thad Jones, Maria Schneider, Alan Broadbent, and Anita Brown. The show also features special guests Mark Simon and Greg "Gizzy" Gisbert.

Greg Gisbert

Trumpet player Greg Gisbert hit the national jazz scene at an early age and seems to have been on the road ever since. Over the years he has been an integral player with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mingus, Roy Hargrove, Horace Silver, Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Shew, Maria Schneider, John Fedchok, and the Smithsonian, Carnegie Hall , and Vanguard Big Bands. Gisbert also has three CD’s out as a leader on the Criss Cross label. He currently is lead trumpet for the new Broadway hit, "After Midnight," a review of Duke Ellington music produced in coordination with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Orchestra. He has often been described as fiery, honest and maniacally talented.

Mark Simon

Saxophonist Mark Simon lives in Denver, CO and has had years of experience performing with top name players from all over the country. Simon serves on the faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder and is known for his soulful tone and hard-swinging grooves.

Advance tickets, at $15 general, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students/children, are available at the University Box Office located at the corner of Third and Chestnut Streets.
