That is how Rocky Winslow, Director of Jazz Studies at CSU, Chico, describes the Jazz X-Press’ upcoming spring semester concert, Jazz X-Pressions.

Presented Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre, Jazz X-Pressions will feature original compositions written by various members of the ensemble, including Aaron Drange, Roxanne Winslow, Chris Navarrete, Cole Geiger, and Sam Graden.

Joining the Jazz X-Press onstage will be “two amazing guest artists,” said Winslow —drummer Paul Romaine and pianist Eric Gunnison. Both Romaine and Gunnison are members of the highly acclaimed jazz group, Convergence, and are “jaw dropping players,” said Winslow.

Romaine has played with some of the best groups/musicians in the jazz world, including the Woody Herman Orchestra, Eddie Harris, Benny Golson, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Gunther Schuller, Charlie Rouse, Eddie Gomez, Jack, Marlena Shaw, Clark Terry, Dave Grusin, Robin Eubanks and others.

Gunnison has performed at Carnegie Hall, and in Cuba and Switzerland as Carmen McCrae’s pianist. Other Jazz luminaries he has shared the stage with include Roberta Gambarini, Rene Marie, Randy Brecker, Jim McNeely, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, Wallace Roney and Bobby Watson.

“Our special guests will be here a few days leading up to the concert, providing professional insight to our students and working with the Jazz X-Press in rehearsals and several clinics,” said Winslow.

You can also catch Romaine and Gunnison on April 25th at the DownLo in downtown Chico when they perform during “Thursday Night Jazz.” They will be joined onstage for the 8 p.m. show with Winslow (trumpet), Greg D’Augelli (saxophone/bass), and several members of the Jazz X-Press.
