Bold and Beautiful: Turner to Present "6° of Wayne
Thiebaud" Art Exhibition, November 3-December 17

"6° of Wayne Thiebaud" Art ExhibitionThe Janet Turner Print Museum at CSU, Chico will explore Northern California printmakers and their connection to the famous pop artist pioneer Wayne Thiebaud.

The exhibition, 6° of Wayne Thiebaud, runs November 3-December 17 with a curator's talk and reception on Thursday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m.

Thiebaud, a retired art professor at U.C. Davis who has lived in Sacramento since 1950, is credited with giving a specific West Coast/Northern California adaptation to the classic pop art genre. His work is known for its heavy pigment, bright bold colors, and exaggerated shadows. Thiebaud’s pop art paintings and prints of commonplace objects – cakes, pastries, boots, toys, toilets, lipstick – hang in the world’s greatest galleries and are sought after by collectors.

Bold works varying in subject matter by Thiebaud contemporaries Nathan Oliveria, William Wiley, Roy deForest, Fritz Scholder, Robert Nugent, David Gilhooly, Robert Arneson, Mel Ramos, Gregory Kondos, Ed Ruscha, Michael Bravo and William Wolff will be featured at The Turner.

The exhibition will show the important influences Thiebaud and these artists added to the pop art movement.

“We will have a ‘family tree’ to explain the connections we found among the artists,” said Turner Curator Catherine Sullivan, adding that the exhibition will attest to the quality and longevity of Northern California artists and their importance and unique contributions to the contemporary/pop art movement.

Printmaking techniques represented in the exhibition include lithograph, etching, and serigraph. Because many of the artists are painters, their prints often emphasize color as part of the compositional image.

Sullivan, along with Turner Collection Manager Adria Crossen Davis, in consultation with retired CSU, Chico Department of Art and Art History professor James McManus, selected works for the exhibition from The Turner Collection – many which were purchased by Janet Turner herself; additional pieces in the exhibition are on loan from local art collector Reed Applegate.

A select number of prints from the Turner Collection that expand on the 6° of Wayne Thiebaud theme will also be displayed in the Ayres Hall first floor cases on the CSU, Chico campus.

The Janet Turner Print Museum is located in the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico, adjacent to the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, and is open during exhibits Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
